Kipps, Thomas J. M.D. Ph.D.

Biography:

Dr. Kipps is a UCSD Professor of Medicine and Deputy Director of Research at the Moores UCSD Cancer Center. He received his Ph.D. in Immunology and M.D. from Harvard University and had his residency and fellowship training in Internal Medicine, Hematology, and Genetics at Stanford University.

Dr. Kipps has a national and international reputation for his work in cancer research, immunology, and gene therapy. He is the author of more than 240 publications and is the PI on several peer-reviewed grants, including an award from NCI/NIH to fund the Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia Consortium (CRC). The CRC involves collaboration with eight other Cancer Centers around the nation. Kipps has 20 year's experience in combining research and clinical care responsibilities. Dr. Kipps is also the Deputy Director for Research for the UCSD Cancer Center, and Associate Director of the UCSD Gene Therapy Program. Dr. Kipps has published 145 articles on hematologic malignancies. His main area of research is Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL).

His research interests include: human B cell physiology with emphasis on B cell antigen presentation, accessory molecules involved in cognate T-cell B-cell interactions, signal transduction, & immunoglobulin gene expression; human B cell lymphoproliferative diseases with emphasis on pathogenic mechanisms, immunoglobulin gene expression, & innovative forms of immunotherapy; in vitro or in vivo somatic cell transfection or transduction using plasmid DNA or viral expression vectors for gene immunotherapy of neoplastic disease; and structure-function studies of immunoglobulin or accessory molecules involved in signal transduction or cognate cell-cell interactions.
