Keating, Armand MD, FRCP

Biography:
Armand Keating, M.D. is Professor of Medicine, Director, Division of Hematology, and Epstein Chair in Cell Therapy and Transplantation at the University of Toronto. For the past decade he was Chief of Medical Services and Head of the Department of Medical Oncology and Hematology, Princess Margaret Hospital/Ontario Cancer Institute as well as Director of Hematology-Oncology at Mt Sinai Hospital. In October 2006, he become Director of the newly-formed Princess Margaret Hospital Cell Therapy and Translational Research Program.

Dr. Keating obtained his medical degree from the University of Ottawa, completed internal medicine and hematology residency at the University of Toronto and a research fellowship in the Division of Oncology at the University of Washington, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, and VA Medical Center in Seattle. Upon his return to Toronto he was a Cancer Research Scientist of the National Cancer Institute of Canada for 10 years.

He has served on numerous grants panels including the U.S. National Cancer Institute Program Projects Subcommittee D (funds major cancer-related program project grants) which he chaired. He is past Chair of the Autologous Blood and Marrow Transplant Registry (Medical College of Wisconsin), and a past president of the American Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation and the immediate past president of the Canadian Hematology Society. Dr Keating is   active in the American Society of Hematology as a member of the Executive Committee having been a Councilor, and currently serves as its Secretary. He is also the current Chair of the Steering Committee for Cell-based Therapy of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, US National Institutes of Health.

In addition, he is Chair of the Scientific and Clinical Affairs Committee of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of America as well as Chair of its Translational Research Grants Panel. He was recently elected Vice Chair responsible for Medical and Scientific Affairs on the Board of Directors of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. He is on the boards of numerous scholarly journals and serves as co-editor of Bone Marrow Transplantation, associate editor of Biology of Blood and Marrow Transplantation and guest editor of Cancer. He is past editor of Leukemia and Lymphoma.

Dr. Keating’s clinical and research interests focus on anti-cancer cell therapy, blood and marrow transplantation, leukemia, lymphoma and regenerative medicine. He has conducted laboratory and translational research in cell therapy, normal and leukemic hematopoiesis and on the biology and clinical application of marrow mesenchymal stromal cells. He is the author of 290 publications on these subjects.
